A boards bedlam occurs every time board exam results are out, both kids and parents taking part in it. Here are some words of wisdom for them.
Ever since the board results have been out in the preceding week, there has been a lot of brouhaha in the social media with people uploading, flaunting or rather announcing the ninety-fives and ninety-sixes. Board results! Are you serious? Does that even matter? Are those who have an aggregate of 75% denied the right to a proper and respectful life in the future?
But, this discussion is perhaps futile to the millions of students about to take the board exams and more so for the parents of such students. I am not an educationist, but an average academician who feels extremely sorry for kids who are caught in the rat race of securing the highest percentages in the boards. So, this is what I want to say to them.
Dear Kids,
You are more valuable than the percentage you hold. Hard work and determination always results in success. In other words, your success is in proportion to the effort you put in. So, now when you have the result of your performance, learn to accept it as it is. You cannot go back in time to improve it any more. But then, if you have not achieved a ninety plus, it is not the end of the world for you.
Board exams are always a turn in life, they help you realize your interests, your inclinations and your near future. The mark-sheet that shows you the level of performance in each subject is merely based on your effort, but not a pre-condition of your future.
Today you may not have fared well in Mathematics, tomorrow you might become an author, a lawyer or a teacher. You have a whole world with a plethora of opportunities in front of you. Your future lies in your passion to explore this wonderful truth.
Now, for the kids who have secured an above average to a brilliant pointer, it is indeed laudable for friends and family when you have secured a good result. Even you should appreciate yourself, but please abstain yourself from being overshadowed by the thought that this has been an ultimate success for you.
This is not the final destination of your life or your education. It is a turn where you are expected to move ahead with fortitude and purposefulness. And finally, just DO YOUR BEST AND LEAVE THE REST.
Dear Parents,
Your worry, pride, disappointment and happiness over your child are understandable and justified to the extent that you accept the situation that your child is in.
Again, board results are not the ultimate destiny of your child. Think about your times. You too had taken the boards, but how much have the results affected you so far? Did your marks ever help you through the difficult times of your life? Did they make you a better or a worse person?
Your anxiety is justified considering that the competition is extremely difficult for the kids today, and with ever soaring cut-offs of the colleges and tough entrance examinations, and the race to secure admission to a good college is very taxing.
However, when your kid was born, did you not wish that he or she grows up to become a fine and virtuous person? Please do not be swayed by how many marks the neighbor’s son or daughter has secured, and do not compare your child’s progress with that of someone else’s. Instead, consider the sincere effort that your child puts into studies.
Let not exam fear engulf your child. Your child is more precious than the boards, the competition, the percentage, the neighborhood talk and the prestigious colleges.
Dear Teachers,
The greatest responsibility in society lies with the teachers. You are the ones who create the future citizens from every profession.
The ultimate goal of teaching is to create good human beings. Please nurture the habit of acceptance in the kids from a very young age. Their marks, mark-sheet, performance and exams should not be the ultimate object of their lives. Therefore, they need to be taught to look beyond such menial concerns, and instead work for a higher purpose in life.
Let not a ninety be the goal of the student, let the goal be the best effort and determination towards the best. The ability to accept success and failures as they come should come naturally to them. So, encourage them, motivate them and inspire them, for you alone can create a generation of responsible upright citizens.

Instead of seeking vengeance after horrific crimes, the public should push for faster and better judicial resolutions. That is the best tribute we can pay to the victims.
Trigger Warning: This deals with rape, violence against women and police brutality, and may be triggering for survivors.
On the news yesterday we came to know that 10 police officers who had killed 4 young men arrested for the rape and murder of Hyderabad doctor in an “encounter” have been found “guilty of concocting their story, and were to be charged with murder.” The report of the commission doing this enquiry also says “The panel also found that police have deliberately attempted to suppress the fact that at least three of the deceased were minors – two of them 15 years old.”
December 29, 2019 was a Friday no different from any other. I was running late so had no time to read the newspaper. On the way to work, I logged onto to Twitter to catch up with the news. The first thing I saw was the breaking story on the horrific gang rape and murder of the 26 year old doctor on the outskirts of Hyderabad.
To think that money can buy you anything is as wrong as singling a woman out after her divorce because the world feels she got overcompensated.
A lot of people are attracted to money and that’s not a bad thing. Which is also why everyone talks about money and the rich. The rich always make the headlines.
The rich, also, get upset when their personal lives are talked about, and rightly so. They have all the right to privacy.
Time moves on. However, people do not.
