The story revolves around three generations of women in the author’s family, (the author, her mother and grandmother) against the backdrop of civil war and the Chinese Cultural Revolution.

Jung Chang was born and brought up in China and later moved to the west. This book first came out in 1991 and is widely read all over the world, selling over 10 million copies around the world.
