After being pronounced guilty on 26th August, the sentence for the Dera Sacha Sauda chief Gurmeet Ram Rahim Singh is two jail terms of 10-years each for his offences.
After a gruelling period of 15 years, justice has finally been served to Gurmeet Ram Rahim Singh, the chief of Dera Sacha Sauda and a self-proclaimed godman, for sexually exploiting two of his women followers in the name of spirituality.
In a special court held at the Rohtak jail, where the convict was confined for the last two days, the judges finally announced his sentence after hearing the case from both sides: the CBI and the defence lawyers.
While the defence pleaded for the minimum punishment, i.e., 7 years, the CBI was firm in its stance to demand the maximum punishment of 10 years. It is, indeed, a day to applaud the CBI and the judiciary for providing justice to the two women. Considering the fact that this man is actually a very influential person, it must not have been easy for the investigating agencies to do their work and that is why this case is a milestone for the stakeholders involved.
The main issue that was pressed upon, and what made the crime significantly worse was the fact that this fake baba betrayed the trust of his million of followers. Followers who trusted him so much that they were capable of the violence that they pulled on Friday evening. We just hope that more violence does not follow and that the people have come to terms with the fact that their beloved baba is nothing more than a rapist who broke their trust.
Even more worth mentioning is the courage of the two women who filed the case and persisted with it, despite all the challenges they must surely have had to face. In this country, it is not easy for any woman to file a case of rape and fight it through, especially when the accused is as influential.
This sentence gives Indian women courage that someone is fighting in their corner! Also, this is a developing story and more information may be added as it emerges.

UP Boards Topper Prachi Nigam was trolled on social media for her facial hair; our obsession with appearance is harsh on young minds.
Prachi Nigam’s photo has been doing the rounds on social media for the right reasons. Well, scratch that- I wish the above statement were true. This 15-year-old girl should ideally be revelling in her spectacular achievement of scoring a whopping 98.05% and topping her tenth-grade boards. But oddly enough, along with her marks, it’s something else that garners more attention – her facial hair.
While the trolls are driving themselves giddy by mocking this girl who hasn’t even completed her school yet, the ones who are taking her side are going one step ahead – they are sharing her photoshopped pictures, sans the facial hair, looking nothing less than a celebrity with captions saying – “Prachi Nigam, ten years later”.
Doctors have already diagnosed her with PCOD in their comments, based on photographic evidence. While we have names for people shamed for their weight – body shaming, for their skin colour- racism, for their age- age shaming, for being a female- sexism, this category of shaming where one faces criticism for their appearance has no name. With that, it also has zero shame attached to it.
