Among the earliest Indian women to build large businesses, Kiran Mazumdar Shaw, CEO of Biocon inspires every young woman who dreams of making it to the top.
Kiran Mazumdar Shaw’s story is one of self-made success in corporate India. Her story is special not just because she is a woman, but because she was among the earliest to spot opportunity in the (then) emerging area of bio-pharmaceuticals in India. She has also been an advocate for entrepreneurship in India, much before it became the cool thing to do.
While there are many women entrepreneurs in India now, there are still fewer stories of women who have built very large companies. It is not our case that bigger is always better, but – we do need some role models to show us that we can do it!
Why we find Kiran Mazumdar Shaw inspiring:
– Because she is a ‘garage startup’ entrepreneur
– Because she has demonstrated that women can build businesses – and build them big
– Because she has built an adaptable business and had the courage to change tracks when necessary; at a personal level from brewmaster to enzyme maker and then to a business in bio-pharma
– Because she overcame early adversity when no one would hire a female brewmaster and decided to go her own road instead

Did the creators of Masaba Masaba just wake up one morning, go to the sets and decide to create something absolutely random without putting any thought into it?
Anyone who knows about Neena Gupta’s backstory would say that she is a boss lady, a badass woman, and the very definition of a feminist. I would agree with them all.
However, after all these decades of her working in the Indian film industry, is her boldness and bravery the only things worth appreciating?
The second season of Masaba Masaba (2020-2022) made me feel as if both Neena Gupta and her daughter Masaba have gotten typecast when it comes to the roles they play on screen. What’s more is that the directors who cast them have stopped putting in any effort to challenge the actors, or to make them deliver their dialogues differently.
Alia and Shafali Shah's film Darlings is a journey of resisting and flouting patriarchy in the process of achieving individuality.
Trigger Warning: This deals with domestic violence and may be triggering to survivors.
Darling is a word which is used affectionately to address one’s beloved while they are in love with each other. Badru was called darling by her abusive and alcoholic husband Humza while she was head over heels in love with him and owed blind allegiance to him enduring all domestic abuse he hurled upon her. However as the film progresses we see Badru’s metamorphosis and how she becomes her own darling by realizing that she is worthy of love and respect, which she has to herself shower upon her.
