Eyes help us to see. By taking care of our eyes, we can avoid unnecessary hassle in our lives. Once in a year, consulting an ophthalmologist is the best way to ensure our vision is safe. It is an optimum measure to curtail unnecessary blindness. Here are 5 ways to keep your eyes healthy:

  1. Regular visits to eye hospitals:
    • If parents are blood related, then chances of eye problems are higher in the offsprings. Have regular eye tests done from a young age.
    • If you are above 40 years of age, it is good to have a checkup done annually. This helps to identify age related issues and changes in the eye.
    • If any of your family member has diabetics or hyper tension, then it becomes a must to visit the eye clinic periodically.
    • If you are inclined towards reading books, working on the laptop, spending more time in front of the small screen, then you need to consult the eye doctor to understand eye relaxing exercises and to avoid dryness of the eye.
  2. If you are already wearing spectacles for reasons like myopia, hyper myopia or some other eye condition, wear the prescribed glasses regularly. Don’t avoid them. That may lead to serious loss of vision in future. With advancement in the eye care, lens and LASER treatment has made life easy for all. Try to use these methodologies in consultation with the doctors. Even the spectacle with high power comes with very thin plastic/fiber lenses with features like anti-glare coating to ease night driving.
  3. Use only the eye drops or tablets as prescribed by the doctor on time to save the existing vision and also to avoid irreversible damage. Don’t go for Over The Counter (OTC) drugs. Keep up to the review date. In between, if you feel any changes in your vision, don’t wait till the review date, meet the doctor and share your difficulties to get timely treatment.
  4. If you have any family history of eye problems, please share it with your  treating doctor. This will aid him to provide you with preventive measures to take precautions to keep your eyes healthy. Though some conditions cannot be prevented, the doctor will try to postpone it as much as possible.
  5. In case of an injury to the eye, immediately rush to the eye doctor. Don’t make delay. Injuries related to retina or cornea need to be treated within a stipulated time frame to avoid loss of vision. It is always best to get the treatment as quick as possible.
