Does your body language make you look powerful or weak? Here’s how to stay safe using the correct body language.
A potential attacker scans for weak and easy to overpower individuals. Whether you’re powerful or not, is mostly displayed through your body language.
Here are a few ideas that you might find helpful. Do watch the video at the end.
So that any person thinks twice before messing with you. Don’t walk like you are lost or strolling about, especially when you are alone. Keep your head up at all times so that you are aware of your surroundings.
So that you don’t have to search for them in your handbag at the parking. This helps in sending out a message of ‘being in control.’
Do not be looking down at your cell phone while walking on a street as that puts you in a low power pose. In addition it also distracts you from your surroundings.
This tells them that you are surveying your surrounding and that if they mess with you; they’ll be identified.
A one sided lip raise is the expression for contempt. This will come handy in identifying a potential threat. An attacker thinks that he is superior to you and can overcome you easily. He therefore will flash the micro-expression of contempt. This picture is an example of contempt.
When you keep your shoulders pulled back, feet firmly planted on the ground and claim your territory you not just feel more confident, you also come across as more powerful. This is a deterrent for a possible attacker.
If you are showing fear or anxiety on your face it will convey that you’re not in control of yourself. Always, keep your facial muscles relaxed to show self-confidence.

UP Boards Topper Prachi Nigam was trolled on social media for her facial hair; our obsession with appearance is harsh on young minds.
Prachi Nigam’s photo has been doing the rounds on social media for the right reasons. Well, scratch that- I wish the above statement were true. This 15-year-old girl should ideally be revelling in her spectacular achievement of scoring a whopping 98.05% and topping her tenth-grade boards. But oddly enough, along with her marks, it’s something else that garners more attention – her facial hair.
While the trolls are driving themselves giddy by mocking this girl who hasn’t even completed her school yet, the ones who are taking her side are going one step ahead – they are sharing her photoshopped pictures, sans the facial hair, looking nothing less than a celebrity with captions saying – “Prachi Nigam, ten years later”.
Doctors have already diagnosed her with PCOD in their comments, based on photographic evidence. While we have names for people shamed for their weight – body shaming, for their skin colour- racism, for their age- age shaming, for being a female- sexism, this category of shaming where one faces criticism for their appearance has no name. With that, it also has zero shame attached to it.
