These are 5 life lessons for my daughter, that I believe are important. What would you say to your children?
Every parent has certain lessons they’ve learnt; life lessons they believe will be invaluable to their children. Do share what your most precious lessons to your children would be.
I cannot emphasize how important education is. I know many people cite Sachin Tendulkar’s example to make a point that a degree is not necessary in order to be successful, but that is just a one off instance. Without a proper education, you are nobody in this world. Education gives you the financial independence to face the world with self confidence.
Never marry for looks or money or simply due to peer pressure. Marry the person who will be the rock of your life, who will stay with you in difficult times. Don’t go around looking for your tall, dark and handsome Prince Charming. Rather, marry the person you can share your golden years with.
Marriage is not all roses, contrary to what you see on TV. Unlike the ‘happily ever after’ ending, the real challenges kick in after you get married. There are adjustments to be made and misunderstandings which may lead to fights, but don’t let your ego get in the way of love.
Every parent, whether he or she is rich or poor, wants their child to have the best and they would go to any extent, undergo any sacrifices to ensure that their children don’t miss out on anything. As a child, I was aware of the sacrifices my parents made for me, but being a mother has given me a whole new perspective.
So my dear daughter, no matter where life takes you, remember that there are two people who love you unconditionally no matter what. In return all they ask for is that you remember them and respect them.
Life is a race and the moment you get what you want, there will be more goals in front of you. Better job, higher salary, bigger house, bigger car…the list is endless. It’s only human to want something better in life but don’t let this quest ruin your journey. Just take a pause sometimes and be grateful for what you have. Think of the less fortunate ones who don’t have what you do and would gladly trade places with you.
Though you may not realize the importance of this at a young age, I cannot stress how important it is to eat healthy food. You may give yourself the occasional treat of junk food but don’t make it a way of life. A healthy lifestyle will go a long way in keeping sickness at bay. Plus, staying fit makes you feel good about yourself.
Share one or more lessons you’ve learnt – that you feel your child needs to know!

UP Boards Topper Prachi Nigam was trolled on social media for her facial hair; our obsession with appearance is harsh on young minds.
Prachi Nigam’s photo has been doing the rounds on social media for the right reasons. Well, scratch that- I wish the above statement were true. This 15-year-old girl should ideally be revelling in her spectacular achievement of scoring a whopping 98.05% and topping her tenth-grade boards. But oddly enough, along with her marks, it’s something else that garners more attention – her facial hair.
While the trolls are driving themselves giddy by mocking this girl who hasn’t even completed her school yet, the ones who are taking her side are going one step ahead – they are sharing her photoshopped pictures, sans the facial hair, looking nothing less than a celebrity with captions saying – “Prachi Nigam, ten years later”.
Doctors have already diagnosed her with PCOD in their comments, based on photographic evidence. While we have names for people shamed for their weight – body shaming, for their skin colour- racism, for their age- age shaming, for being a female- sexism, this category of shaming where one faces criticism for their appearance has no name. With that, it also has zero shame attached to it.
