Indian Chandrayaan 2 scheduled to reach the moon in September 2019 is a huge achievement, but do you know the two amazing women scientists who led the mission?
It’s a matter of utmost happiness that we are about to reach the surface of the moon very soon, yes we are flying high! A large part of the credit goes to these two super women who lead India’s second lunar mission, Chandrayaan 2.
As a woman its truly heartwarming that women are proving themselves on every facets of life. For the very first time in the history of India a woman leads the space mission as the project director, with another woman being a mission director.
Project director – ISRO Chandrayaan 2
Muthayya Vanitha has earlier won the Best Woman Scientist Award of the Astronautical Society of India in 2006, and was a key person in the launch and success of Mangalyaan in November 2013. Vanitha is an electronics system engineer, who has had a very distinguished career at ISRO, has struck again with the new mission, and became the first ever woman project director at ISRO, breaking all stereotypes and barriers!
Though she was one of the best among the ISRO Scientists, Vanitha was not ready to take up such a huge project and lead it, however she was persuaded by M Annadurai, who was the main man behind Chandrayaan 1. Once she took up charge, though, she led with sheer confidence, and made the dream come true for the country as well as made all the women proud.
With her efficiency in problem solving skills, she was also in charge for the data operations for the country’s remote sensing satellites. We need many more women like her for our country to rise above the level with pride and confidence.
Mission director – ISRO Chandrayaan 2
Ritu Karidhal, an alumnus of IISC, Bengaluru, has already been the deputy operations director for Mangalyaan in 2013-2014. She has been a confident leader then, and has now handled the prestigious lunar mission in confidence like never before as the mission director.
Ritu was in charge of designing Chandrayaan 2’s onward autonomy system which gives the spacecraft the ability to navigate its trajectory and respond to satellite with a relative degree of independence.
More power to the women who are yet to be cross all barriers to fly high!

UP Boards Topper Prachi Nigam was trolled on social media for her facial hair; our obsession with appearance is harsh on young minds.
Prachi Nigam’s photo has been doing the rounds on social media for the right reasons. Well, scratch that- I wish the above statement were true. This 15-year-old girl should ideally be revelling in her spectacular achievement of scoring a whopping 98.05% and topping her tenth-grade boards. But oddly enough, along with her marks, it’s something else that garners more attention – her facial hair.
While the trolls are driving themselves giddy by mocking this girl who hasn’t even completed her school yet, the ones who are taking her side are going one step ahead – they are sharing her photoshopped pictures, sans the facial hair, looking nothing less than a celebrity with captions saying – “Prachi Nigam, ten years later”.
Doctors have already diagnosed her with PCOD in their comments, based on photographic evidence. While we have names for people shamed for their weight – body shaming, for their skin colour- racism, for their age- age shaming, for being a female- sexism, this category of shaming where one faces criticism for their appearance has no name. With that, it also has zero shame attached to it.
