Women’s fashion and empowerment are interconnected. For ages, women have used fashion as a tool for authorization, to break gender stereotypes, promote body positivity, and promote inclusivity.

Women’s fashion and history

The history of fashion can be traced back to Charles Frederick Worth, who is widely regarded as the first person to achieve international fame in the fashion industry. Worth believed that fashion should be celebrated and revered, and that clothes were more than just practical items to be worn.

Instead, he saw fashion as an opportunity to create authentic masterpieces that could express a unique vision and inspire others. Worth’s designs were truly exceptional and represented a major turning point in the history of fashion.

In the 1970s, fashion became a powerful statement of rebellion against the government\’s attitudes. Even though undergarments like bras and corsets were originally designed as oppressive instruments,  women took back the power and turned them into tools of revolution. Tight corsets and bras were not the symbols of the weaker sex any more, but were viewed as more functional garments.

In recent years, the fashion industry has made great strides in increasing female representation among incoming chief executive officers. In fact, there was an almost 100 per cent increase in the number of female CEOs hired in the apparel industry in 2020, with more than 100 individuals taking on CEO roles overall.

This increase in female leadership is a significant achievement. It is encouraging to see more and more women breaking through the glass ceiling and taking on leadership roles in this dynamic and evolving fashion industry.

Women are expected to dress a certain way, conform to certain beauty standards, and adhere to cultural norms that have been around for generations. However, women are using fashion to break these stereotypes and promote gender equality.

Women are challenging traditional fashion norms and embracing their individuality through fashion. This is evident in the rising popularity of gender-neutral clothing and the growing trend of unisex fashion.

Sustainable fashion practices include upcycling, repurposing, and the use of sustainable materials such as organic cotton, hemp, bamboo, etc. By adopting such sustainable fashion practices, women can empower themselves and promote positive change in the world; leading to a healthier planet.
