The trailer of Luv Ranjan's Tu Jhoothi Main Makkar starring Ranbir Kapoor and Shraddha Kapoor was released a couple of days ago.
The trailer of Tu Jhoothi Main Makkaar released on 23 January 2023, and predictably it was trending on most social media platforms shortly thereafter. The movie sees the pairing of Shraddha Kapoor and Ranbir Kapoor for the first time. The movie is directed, co-written and co-produced by Luv Ranjan (this is significant – read on). Check out the trailer of Tu Jhoothi Main Makkaar and some of the reactions to it:
The trailer has had over 48 million views in less than 24 hrs so clearly, there is a great deal of anticipation in the film-going public with regard to this release. The movie releases on 8 March 2023.
#RanbirKapoor does fit better in a more mature rom-com at this stage of his career
The situational comedy that follows in most #LuvRanjan films call for fun theatre experiences & #TuJhoothiMainMakkaar is not pretending to be more than that.

Billed as a rom-com, the movie is shot in exotic locales like Spain and Mauritius and elsewhere. A lot of people are looking forward to some simple uncomplicated entertainment – a romantic comedy with good looking people and lovely locales.

As is usually the case, the lead actors of the film are busy promoting their film on social media. The woman lead of the film put out this rather puzzling tweet. Is this supposed to be in light of the fact that Ranbir Kapoor is a newly married man? Sort of I-am not-poaching-on-another-woman’s-territory kind of reassurance?

The wife of the leading man also tweeted the trailer. The movie promises (or do I mean threatens) the story of a ‘player’ in the world of romantic relationships; who finds a girl who’s a ‘worthy opponent’. Tu Jhoothi Main Makkaar claims to be a film where Love is a battle of wits (Kudos to Alia Bhatt for letting her man continue to act in movies even after marriage, by the way!)
Actually excited for @be_a_bassi in this movie. Already expecting some killer sarcastic one liners. Kaafi mast.https://t.co/WdXFQjSDpI — Abijit Ganguly (@AbijitG) January 23, 2023

Anubhav Singh Bassi is a well-known stand-up comic who seems cast in the archetypal ‘best friend’ role in the film. Another popular stand-up comic Abhijit Ganguly was seen plugging a mate’s film.
#RanbirKapoor has a great comic timing he should do a comedy moviepic.twitter.com/z3NfmNARD8 — Harminder 🍿🎬🏏 (@Harmindarboxoff) January 16, 2023

A lot of fans are noting that Ranbir Kapoor will be seen in a comic role movie after some considerable time. His more recent releases Shamshera and Brahmāstra: Part One – Shiva came after a 4-year hiatus and were not exactly light-hearted films. That said, it beggars the imagination that the short clip in the tweet qualifies as ‘comedy’; where a woman is seen to be slyly but viciously attacking another. This is often the standard of ‘humour’ in our films… but that is a rant for another day.

We certainly see the female lead in a variety of brief clothing, but in this case it seems to cut both ways. Clearly the demographic that likes to lust over chiselled male abs is also being catered to here.
Mumbai, Jan 23 (IANS) Director Luv Ranjan, who is awaiting the release of his upcoming theatrical rom-com, 'Tu Jhoothi Main Makkaar', finally broke his silence on why his films always have a female as the antagonist. https://t.co/Z4roJUPBJy pic.twitter.com/ZINvd676qY — Indian Loop (@indianloop) January 24, 2023

The filmmaker here is Luv Ranjan who has previously brought us films like Pyaar Ka Punchnama, Sonu Ke Titu Ki Sweety, Pyaar Ka Punchnama 2, De De Pyaar De. If there is something that is common in each of these films it is that they are ‘bro’ films where the woman is always cast in the role of the manipulative, evil seductress.
We usually see trite stories about the hapless man caught in the snare of the scheming, grasping woman… is Tu Jhoothi Main Makkaar going to be another? We shall know soon enough, on 8th March.

Some time ago, Imtiaz Ali and Hansal Mehta respectively spoke of biopics of Madhubala and Meena Kumari. But do these biopics do justice to these women?
I recently came across a Reddit thread that discussed the fact that filmmaker Imtiaz Ali had announced making a biopic of Madhubala, and I wanted to explore this a little.
Of late, biopics based on the lives of beautiful but fatefully tragic women such as Lady Diana and Marilyn Monroe have created waves. Closer at home, we hear about the possibilities of biopics being made on the lives of Meena Kumari and Madhubala as well. These were hugely famous, stunningly beautiful women who were the heartthrobs of millions; who died tragically young.
I am glad that the Orange Flower Awards seek self-nomination. High achieving women often suffer from self-doubt, and this is a good way to remind us that we are good enough.
A few days ago, I saw an Instagram post announcing the Orange Flower Awards which recognise the power of women’s voices. I read about it with curiosity, but didn’t give it a second thought.
I received an e mail from Women’s Web seeking self-nominations for the Orange Flower Awards, and I ignored it. Yes, I write occasionally, but I didn’t think my work was good enough for me to nominate myself in any of the categories.
A past winner especially tagged me and asked me to look at nominating myself, and I told her that I was not ready yet. “That is up to you”, she said, “but I think you should nominate yourself.”
