Dr Anshu Jamsenpa is the fastest female mountaineer to scale the Mt. Everest twice within 5 days, and the first one to do two double ascents.
They say nature is unconquerable. But there have been instances where humans have overpowered nature, including scaling the mighty Mt. Everest. If once is considered as an achievement, meet Dr. Anshu Jamsenpa, who ascended the highest peak in the world 5 times, the top number as of now.
Anshu Jamsenpa was born in Dirang, a remote village in the mountains of Arunachal Pradesh. Her journey began when the Arunachal Mountaineering and Adventure Sports Association, headed by her husband Tsering Wange, identified her love for rock climbing and adventurous sporting activities. They encouraged her to begin formal training so that she could pursue serious mountaineering.
During her advanced training, she realized her love for mountains and subsequently, decided to climb Mt. Everest.
In an interview, she narrated how her experience of climbing the peak for the first time. She said:
“For the first time, the feeling was overwhelming. I felt closer to God. I had goosebumps all over my body. The view up there, that picture, is something one only sees in dreams.”
In 2011, her first climb was on May 12th, and again on the 21st of that month. This made her the first woman to scale the Mt. Everest twice in the same season. But that was not the end. Her attempts at double ascents had to be twice abandoned, in 2013 and 2014, due to harsh weather conditions. They were limited to only single scales.
She achieved her dream in 2017. Within a span of five days from May 16 to May 21, 118 hours and 30 minutes in total, she climbed the highest peak twice. By doing so, this heroic feat became the fastest ever double ascent by a woman ever.
On 16th May, she reached the peak at around 9.15 am. That was her first climb of the season. Her second one started on 19th May, and she reached the peak at around 7.45am on the 21st.
Anshu Jamsenpa holds two world records. She is the only female mountaineer in the world to successfully complete double ascents of Mt. Everest, twice, and the fastest woman to complete a double ascent (i.e. within 5 days).
Her achievements have been recognized by organizations all over the world. Additionally, she also holds the unparalleled and unbeatable record of scaling three Himalayan peaks – Lobuche at 6,119 m, Pokalde at 5,806 m, and Island Peak at 6,160 m – in merely 6 days.
In 2017, she was bestowed with the Tenzing Norgay National Adventure Award, which is the highest award for adventure instituted by the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports of the Government of India. The then-president Ram Nath Kovind felicitated her.
The following year, she was given the ‘Eastern Himalayan global environment ambassador’ award in the presence of over 1000 delegates from over 13 countries.
In the year 2021, Dr. Jamsenpa was bestowed with the fourth-highest civilian award; the Padma Shri, in the category of Sports, for her towering contributions in the field of mountaineering.
Dr. Anshu Jamsenpa is the daughter of an Indo-Tibetian Border Police Officer, and a Nurse. She is currently 42 years old, and a mother of two.

UP Boards Topper Prachi Nigam was trolled on social media for her facial hair; our obsession with appearance is harsh on young minds.
Prachi Nigam’s photo has been doing the rounds on social media for the right reasons. Well, scratch that- I wish the above statement were true. This 15-year-old girl should ideally be revelling in her spectacular achievement of scoring a whopping 98.05% and topping her tenth-grade boards. But oddly enough, along with her marks, it’s something else that garners more attention – her facial hair.
While the trolls are driving themselves giddy by mocking this girl who hasn’t even completed her school yet, the ones who are taking her side are going one step ahead – they are sharing her photoshopped pictures, sans the facial hair, looking nothing less than a celebrity with captions saying – “Prachi Nigam, ten years later”.
Doctors have already diagnosed her with PCOD in their comments, based on photographic evidence. While we have names for people shamed for their weight – body shaming, for their skin colour- racism, for their age- age shaming, for being a female- sexism, this category of shaming where one faces criticism for their appearance has no name. With that, it also has zero shame attached to it.
