Marathons in India are gaining a lot of response because of awareness of this sport, and also many organizations and companies getting involved.
If you want to try your luck and see to what extent you can push yourself, running a marathon is what you need to do. Running a marathon would make you believe that the only person that you have to beat is yourself.
The word ‘marathon’ came from the first Persian invasion of Greece wherein the Athenians fought the Persians. According to the legend, a Greek messenger was sent, all the way, from the Battle of Marathon to Athens and died on reaching there, crying out “Nike” (victory). He is said to have run an official distance of 42.195 km. And that’s why a full marathon involves completing 42 km of running.
There are many marathons in India, and the most popular and branded ones are often participated in by many. There are half marathons, full marathons, marathons conducted for specific causes etc.
As a marathon runner myself, I know how much motivation and hard work goes into running a marathon. Apart from the ‘pushing your limits’ feel, the sense of running with numerous people is very stimulating and exciting, to a large extent.
Here are some daring marathons in India, including the Pinkathon which is exclusively for women, which are worth your hard work and time.
This is one of Asia’s largest marathons ever conducted because of its mass participation. They have six different categories such as marathon, half marathon, Dream run, Senior citizen run, Champions with Disability. So, this run includes people from all sections of the society.
This marathon is usually conducted in the month of August in Mumbai with Sachin Tendulkar as its brand ambassador. “We believe this event will go a long way in further promoting running in the city and encourage a fit and healthy lifestyle.”
This marathon is conducted to support various charities. It starts out with a rock show, and a flea market along with various other cultural performances. If you want to run a midnight marathon as well as witness an extravagant event, this is the one for you.
This marathon gives you the opportunity to run in the beach. The marathon is usually conducted during low tide wherein it becomes visually pleasant to run.
Conducted all around in India, Pinkathon is one of India’s biggest marathons in India for women. “It is the beginning of a movement carried forward by a growing community of empowered women across India, who share a belief that a healthy family, a healthy nation and a healthy world begins with empowered women.”
During the month of October, the Rishikesh marathon is conducted. The best part of this marathon is that it gives its participants a foretaste of its landmark areas which is visually beautiful – one must absolutely witness such scenic beauty.
This marathon is praised for its fund raising to create awareness around HIV/AIDS prevention in the city. If you feel that you need to be a part of this awareness creation, do participate in this marathon which is usually conducted in the last month of every year.
