Owing to time constraints and lack of kitchen facilities, people staying at hostels seem to be on a perennial quest for easy recipes for hostel cooking.
Hostellers (usually students or working women/men) are a usually a busy lot, and cooking takes a back seat – they would rather be doing something else interesting than try cooking stuff that takes long or too many ingredients.
There is also a lack of good kitchen facilities in most hostels – and the cooking might necessarily have to be done on a solitary hotplate or some such gadget. Cooking takes a back seat in their priority list and they find themselves hunting for quick and easy recipes that are filling and satisfying.
Here are some interesting meals that use easy, quick, and yet tasty recipes for hostel cooking, that I have collated for my comrades putting up at hostels to make their life less burdensome and tiring. Taste and quality has not sacrificed while preparing the list.
Ingredients:
2 slices raisin toasts ½ teaspoon castor sugar Mozzarella cheese A pinch of ground cinnamon 4 strawberries, washed and sliced Honey to serve
All you need to do is mix castor sugar, cinnamon and mozzarella in separate bowl. Spread the mix over the raisin toasts and place sliced strawberries for a relishing meal. Drizzle honey as per taste for a satisfying experience!
2 eggs 1 chopped onion 1 chopped bell pepper 1 chopped tomato Salsa chutney Mozzarella cheese
Beat the eggs and add onions, bell pepper, tomatoes along with salsa chutney and mozzarella. Spread the mix on the pan and cook it evenly on both sides. Season it and serve hot, maybe with some toast, for a replenishing experience. This very simple dish is well known to hostellers – one of the most popular and filling recipes for hostel cooking.
Ingredients
2 chopped onions 2 tablespoon olive oil Salt 6 peeled tomatoes 1 tablespoon dried oregano 1 cup dried bread slices, cubed 4 tablespoon Parmesan cheese
Fry onions in a bowl with a pinch of salt and olive oil until it turns golden brown. Add tomatoes and oregano, add vegetable stock/water and boil it. Puree the mix and top it with plenty of parmesan cheese and bread cubes for a delightful supper. This meal makes the perfect supper as it is as much filling as flavorsome.
Some of the healthiest proteins are provided by salads. And this one is certainly going to boost up your body by providing a bagful of vitamins and other essential nutrients.
4 cup boiled green lentils 2 cup boiled corn 3 tablespoons olive oil 1 diced carrot 1 cut and diced green bell pepper Salt and pepper Fresh Cheese 2 tablespoon lemon juice
Just sauté carrot, bell pepper and season it as per taste. Add the sautéed veggies, boiled lentils and corn in a separate bowl. Add lemon juice, olive oil and fresh cheese and mix it well. You can add oregano for taste enhancement. This peculiar dish comes across one of the healthiest dish yet delicious. One of the most simple in cooking makes it much in demand among the recipes for the hostel cooking as hostellers are on a perpetual hunt for easy, quick and filling recipes.
Try out cheddar and apple sandwich as it guarantees a rich experience that is going to be etched out in your psyche for a long time!
2 slices of multigrain bread 1 tablespoon mustard sauce 1 thin slice of Cheddar cheese Several pieces of thinly sliced apple
Spread mustard sauce evenly on the slices of multigrain bread. Place a thinly sliced layer of Cheddar cheese along with apple slices. Enjoy the lip-smacking sandwich!

UP Boards Topper Prachi Nigam was trolled on social media for her facial hair; our obsession with appearance is harsh on young minds.
Prachi Nigam’s photo has been doing the rounds on social media for the right reasons. Well, scratch that- I wish the above statement were true. This 15-year-old girl should ideally be revelling in her spectacular achievement of scoring a whopping 98.05% and topping her tenth-grade boards. But oddly enough, along with her marks, it’s something else that garners more attention – her facial hair.
While the trolls are driving themselves giddy by mocking this girl who hasn’t even completed her school yet, the ones who are taking her side are going one step ahead – they are sharing her photoshopped pictures, sans the facial hair, looking nothing less than a celebrity with captions saying – “Prachi Nigam, ten years later”.
Doctors have already diagnosed her with PCOD in their comments, based on photographic evidence. While we have names for people shamed for their weight – body shaming, for their skin colour- racism, for their age- age shaming, for being a female- sexism, this category of shaming where one faces criticism for their appearance has no name. With that, it also has zero shame attached to it.
